Question  Back to top
How do I fix a short cup?
Answer
If your brewer is not brewing the full amount selected, it may be caused by the following:
  • The exit needle is clogged by coffee grounds or cocoa mix. Please refer to the K-Cup™ Holder cleaning instructions.
  • The brewer may need to be descaled. Please refer to the descaling instructions.
  • The removable water reservoir was removed during brewing. Place the water reservoir back onto the brewer and perform a cleansing brew without a portion pack.
Question  Back to top
Why am I getting grounds in my cup?
Answer
Coffee grounds may have gathered in the exit needle.

To clean the needle, follow these steps:
  • Remove and clean the exit needle in accordance with the K-Cup™ Holder cleaning instructions.
  • Perform a small-cup cleansing brew and look for any grounds coming out.
  • Repeat cleansing brews to clear out any residual grounds.
  • If you are using the MY K-CUP® Reusable Coffee Filter, please make sure that you are using a course-drip. You should only fill the mesh basket to the bottom of the brown band, which is approximately 2.5 tbs.
If you have not done so recently, it is also recommended that you de-scale your brewer. Please refer to the de-scaling instructions.
Question  Back to top
How do I clean/descale my brewer?
Answer
The brewer should be descaled at least every 3-6 months. Scale is harmless, but if left unattended, it can hinder optimal brewer performance. Descaling your brewer regularly helps maintain the heating element, removable water reservoir and other parts of the brewer that come in contact with water. Better water quality and water heating means a better cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage. We recommend descaling your brewer at least every 6 months (every 3 months if your water has a high mineral content). The descaling process involves using Keurig™ Descaling solution or undiluted white vinegar.  Learn how to descale your brewer

Question  Back to top
Many Keurig brewers offer multiple brew sizes. How do I use this feature to brew a cup of coffee or tea that best suits my taste?
Answer
We understand that the perfect cup means something different to everyone. That is why we offer over 200 K-Cup® packs and multiple brew size options on all of our home brewers. These choices give you the flexibility to make your perfect cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage.

If you’re looking for a robust, more intense beverage, you should choose a smaller brew size on your Keurig brewer. You should also try Extra Bold K-Cup® packs because they contain approximately 30% more ground coffee in each K-Cup® pack. If you’re looking to fill a travel mug without losing the intensity, you may want to try Travel Mug K-Cup® packs which are formulated to create perfectly-brewed coffee on your largest Keurig brew setting. New technology allows for more coffee to be packed into these K-Cup® packs, which means the coffee is as strong and rich when brewed at 10 or 12-oz. as a conventional K-Cup® pack is when brewed at 6 or 8-oz. You can fill up a travel mug and enjoy your favorite coffee all morning long. With all of these choices, brewing your perfect cup is simple and quick.
Question  Back to top
How do I brew an iced beverage?
Answer
Making iced coffee and iced tea is just as easy as pressing the BREW button on your Keurig brewer. Simply fill a 16-oz. plastic tumbler or universal tumbler full of ice, choose your favorite K-Cup® pack and select the 6 or 8-oz. brew size. Look for the “Brew Over Ice” icon on the K-Cup® packs specially crafted to brew over ice. Note: Do not brew directly into a glass.

Iced coffee K-Cup® packs contain more coffee per K-Cup® in order to deliver optimal flavor when brewed over ice. These delicious blends are modified to give you flavorful and refreshing iced coffees. Add cream and sugar to make it your favorite treat. Perfect Iced Tea K-Cup® packs contain a blend of tea, sugar and natural flavor, specifically formulated to brew directly over ice for a Perfect Iced Tea every time.
Question  Back to top
How hot is the water in the brewer?
Answer
Keurig believes that the optimal temperature for brewing coffee, tea and hot cocoa is 192° F. This is the internal temperature of the water in your brewer. However, once your coffee, tea or hot cocoa is brewed, the dispensed temperature can vary greatly. In-cup temperature depends on the cup temperature and material. When brewing into an insulated container, such as a foam or paper cup, 180-185°F in-cup temperature is typically attained. In addition, dispensing into a cold ceramic mug will cool the coffee significantly.

Please note that stream temperature of the first brew after turn-on or after an extended idle period can be a couple degrees cooler. To maximize initial in-cup temperature at home, we recommend running a small cup cleansing-brew prior to brewing a K-Cup® pack, which warms both the mug and the brewer.
Question  Back to top
Can I change the internal temperature of the brewer?
Answer

Several Keurig brewers and Keurig licensed brewers are designed with an adjustable internal brew temperature. Models with this feature include the Special Edition, Ultimate, Platinum, Select, Cuisinart, Breville and OfficePRO® Premier. These brewers allow you to adjust the pre-set temperature of 192°F down by 5 degrees for a temperature range of 187-192°F.

Question  Back to top
How much power does the Keurig brewer use?
Answer
Keurig home brewers use the most power during their initial start up. When heating for the first time after being off, peak usage is 1,500 watts. If the power is kept on, the brewer will keep the internal tank up to temperature using between 200 – 400 watts when heating. While idle and not maintaining heat, the brewer will use the average electricity of a 60 watt light bulb.

All Keurig home brewers are equipped with an Energy Savings Mode Auto Off feature should you choose not to leave the brewer on. The initial heating mode when turning the power on should take about three minutes.
Question  Back to top
How do I drain and store the brewer?
Answer

Once your Keurig home brewer has been primed, you cannot empty the water from the inside. The internal tank of the brewer cannot be drained. If you need to store your brewer, empty the removable water reservoir and store your brewer in a safe and frost-free environment. Please be sure to store your brewer in its upright position to avoid water leakage from the inner tank. If you store the brewer in a cold environment, you run the risk of water freezing inside the brewer and causing damage. When you prepare to use it after storage, we recommend rinsing the removable water reservoir with fresh water and running three cleansing brews without a portion pack. If you plan to move your brewer to a different location, turn the brewer off, unplug it and empty the removable water reservoir. If your brewer has been in an environment below freezing, please be sure to let it warm to room temperature for two hours before brewing.

Question  Back to top
What kind of maintenance is required for the brewer?
Answer
Regular cleaning will prolong the life of the brewer and is recommended for proper operation. We recommend you clean the external components with a soapy, damp, non-abrasive cloth. Never immerse the brewer in water or other liquids. The K-Cup™ Holder and funnel, drip plate and drip tray (on the Elite, Classic, Ultra, Special Edition, Ultimate, Platinum, Select and OfficePRO® Premier) are dishwasher safe. The removable water reservoir and water reservoir removable lid are NOT dishwasher safe so you’ll need to clean them by hand.

Question  Back to top
How do I clean my K-Cup™ holder receptacle?
Answer
  1. Remove the K-Cup® assembly
To remove the assembly from the brewer, open the cover by lifting the handle. Grasp the top of the K-Cup™ Holder with one hand while pushing up on the bottom of the assembly from underneath with the other until it releases. The K-Cup™ Holder is dishwasher safe.
  2. Clean the Funnel
The Funnel can be removed from the K-Cup™ Holder by pulling on it until it snaps off. The Funnel is dishwasher safe. To replace it just snap it back onto the K-Cup™ Holder.
  3. Clean the exit needle
The exit needle is located on the inside bottom of the K-Cup™ Holder. If coffee grounds or cocoa mix gets clogged in the exit needle, it can be cleaned using a paper clip or similar tool. Remove the Funnel from the K-Cup™ Holder, insert the paper clip into the tube and move it around to loosen the clog and remove any debris. Please note, you cannot poke all the way through the needle as the opening of the needle is located on the side and not the top.
  4. Install the K-Cup® assembly into the brewer
After cleaning, align the K-Cup™ Holder tabs with the opening placing the two front tabs on the bottom and the single tab on top and snap it into place by pushing down on the top rim.

Question  Back to top
What type of water should I use in my Keurig brewer?
Answer

Coffee and tea are over 98% water so quality drinking water is necessary for a good coffee, tea or iced beverage. Never use softened water because sodium ions in softened water form a gelatinous mass around the coffee grounds and tea leaves, slowing down the extraction process and causing over-extraction. This can also clog your brewer.

Here are solutions for several common brewing water problems:

  • Problem: My beverage has an “off” taste due to chlorine in the water.
  • Solution: Use the Water Filter Starter Kit to remove chlorine residue.
  • Problem: My beverage has a "chemical" taste such as sulfur or iron.
  • Solution: Use the Water Filter Starter Kit to correct taste contamination.
  • Problem: My brewer has a build-up of magnesium and calcium scale from hard water.
  • Solution: Maintain and clean your brewer using the provided descaling instructions at least every 3-6 months. Do not use well water even if put through a ‘softener’.
  • Problem: The coffee grounds and tea leaves become gooey and the beverage tastes over-extracted or bitter.
  • Solution: Avoid use of softened water to brew. In areas where the water is hard, use bottled drinking water or a filter to purify.

The most common concern with water for brewing is the "hardness" of the water. This refers to various natural minerals found in water such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, sulfate and chloride. The number of grains of dissolved minerals changes the level of soluble solids extracted from the coffee and tea. As hard water passes through the brewer, it produces deposits of scale or lime. This reduces the life and efficiency of the equipment, and affects the brew flavor; bottled or filtered water should be used to solve this problem. Keurig also recommends descaling your brewer at least every 3-6 months depending on your water source.

Question  Back to top
How does the water filter work and where does it go?
Answer
Filter your water for an even better tasting cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage by using the Water Filter Starter Kit accessory. This filter will help rid your water of chlorine taste and smell. Using the water filter will not change the fact that your brewer needs de-scaling every 3-6 months.

To use the Water Filter, soak and insert the filter cartridge in the bottom of the handle assembly. Simply grasp the handle and insert it into your empty, removable water reservoir. Be sure to push down firmly all the way down to correctly attach the Water Filter to the inside of your removable water reservoir.
Question  Back to top
I live at a high altitude. Can I use your brewer?
Answer

While Keurig brewers are made to be used at elevations up to 6,000 ft., portion packs may need to be pre-punctured prior to brewing to release the pressure inside. To do this simply drop the K-Cup® pack into the K-Cup® chamber and push down slowly so that the bottom of the K-Cup® pack is punctured by the exit needle in the bottom of the chamber. Also, the Keurig Special Edition, Ultimate, Platinum, Select and OfficePRO® Premier brewers are equipped with a temperature control so you may want to experiment lowering the brew temperature in elevated areas.

Question  Back to top
My brewer is not working, can I have it serviced?
