About the Brewers

What is the difference between Keurig’s At Home and At Work brewers?

All Keurig brewers share the same innovative single-cup technology that ensures a fresh-brewed, perfect cup of coffee or tea every time. However, Keurig does market separate At Home and At Work brewers with features and UL certification appropriate for their intended use. Our At Home brewers include the Mini, Elite, Ultra, Ultimate, Classic, Special Edition, and Platinum brewer. These brewers were engineered for home use--and are UL Household approved only--and thus should not be used in commercial/office settings. The Mini brewer can be placed in a private office as it is UL Approved for both Household and Commercial use. In general, our Home Brewers are designed for typical home use, including features and aesthetics most appropriate to a kitchen environment. Our Commercial Grade brewers typically brew up to 10 times the daily volume of our home brewers, and thus are specially engineered for heavier usage.

[+] View At Home brewer comparisons

Our At Work brewers are commercial grade and include UL Commercial certification. They are engineered for the robust use found in commercial establishments and include the following models: OfficePROTM, DeskPROTM,B140, B200, and B3000. The OfficePRO, DeskPRO, and B140 brewers are recommended for small offices, and the B200 is perfect for medium sized offices who may want either a pourover or plumbed option. Our full featured B3000 model includes direct line plumbing and automatic K-Cup ejection and storage-it is recommended for high volume offices of more than 30 people. Please note: With the exception of the OfficePROTM Brewing System, we do not sell office brewers direct like we do our At Home brewers. The OfficePROTM Brewing System is available online at keurig.com. All of our At Work brewers, including the OfficePRO are available from our Keurig Authorized Distributor network.

Can I buy a commercial brewer for my home?

Keurig strongly recommends that our home brewers be used at home, and our commercial brewers be placed in office/commercial settings. That is why our At Home brewers are UL Approved for Household use, and our commercial brewers are UL approved for Commercial use. If you would like to purchase a brewer for your home visit our At Home Brewers page. If you would like to purchase a brewer for a small office please consider our OfficePROTM brewer that can be purchased directly online.

Please note that the Keurig Mini brewer is UL Approved for both Household and Commercial use. If you are interested in purchasing this brewer, please view the Mini Brewer on our At Home Brewers page.

Why is Keurig's brewer better?

Keurig's single-cup brewing system is superior to other competitive single cup "pod" coffee makers for several important reasons:

BRANDED VARIETY

Keurig is the only system that lets you fresh brew a wide range (over 200 varieties) of gourmet coffee and tea brands from premium roasters such as Green Mountain, Gloria Jeans, Diedrich, Emeril’s Timothy's, VanHoutte, Tully's, Coffee People, Newman’s Own, Caribou, Bellaccino, Cafe Escapes, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Twinings, and Ghirardelli. K-Cups are also available in Extra Bold varieties which contain up to 30% more coffee.

Keurig's patented portion pack, the K-Cup, yields a superior cup of fresh coffee and tea to competitive "pods".  The K-Cup contains a paper filter that includes the exact amount and grind of fresh roasted coffee (or tea) and is sealed for ultimate freshness. Our system yields a fresh cup, brewed to perfection every time.

SPEED

The Keurig brewer consistently delivers a perfect cup of gourmet coffee or tea, one cup at a time, in less than a minute without waiting to brew a second cup. With competitive pod systems you have to wait up 40 seconds or more before brewing a second cup.

CONVENIENCE

No measuring coffee, cleaning filters, making a mess or wasting coffee.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The Keurig brewer is a technologically advanced product that delivers the exact amount of water at the exact temperature and pressure to brew a perfect cup every time.

The Keurig brewer is a heavy duty, premier product that is designed for frequent, long term use.  It is built with the best, highest quality components.

Many Keurig brewers offer multiple brew sizes. How do I use this feature to brew a cup of coffee or tea that best suits my taste?

We understand that the perfect cup of coffee means something different to everyone. That is why we offer over hundreds of K-Cups and multiple brew sizes on the Elite, B40 Special Edition and Platinum brewers. These choices give you the flexibility to find your perfect cup of coffee. Larger brew sizes do not provide as strong a cup of coffee as the smaller ones — so if you’re looking for a stronger, more intense cup of coffee, we suggest you use a smaller size. You should also try our Extra Bold K-Cups. They contain approximately 30% more ground coffee in each K-Cup and — like all of our varieties — they are sold on our website in 5-packs for sampling. With all of these choices it’s easy for you to find your perfect cup!

How hot is the water in the brewer?

At Keurig we have found that the optimal temperature for brewing coffee is 192° F. This is the internal temperature of the water in your brewer. However, once your coffee/tea is brewed, the dispensed temperature can vary greatly. In-cup temperature depends on the cup temperature and material. When brewing into an insulated container, such as a foam or paper cup, 180-185°F in-cup temperature is typically attained. In addition, dispensing into a cold ceramic mug will cool the coffee significantly.

Please note that stream temperature of the first brew after turn-on or after an extended idle period can be a couple degrees cooler. To maximize initial in-cup temperature at home, we recommend running a small cup cleansing brew prior to brewing a k-cup, which warms both the mug and the brewer.

Keurig does test all brewers prior to shipment. To test the temperature of the coffee/tea dispensed, we utilize electronic peak reading temperature meters, which are much faster responding and more accurate that thermometers typically available in the home.

How much power does the Keurig brewer use?

Keurig Home Brewers use the most power during their initial start up. When heating for the first time after being off, peak usage is 1500 watts. If the power is kept on, the Brewer will keep the internal tank up to temperature using between 200 – 400 watts when heating. While idle and not maintaining heat, the Keurig Home Brewers will use the average electricity of a 60-watt light bulb.

In our Use and Care Guide it is recommended that you leave your brewer on so that it is always ready for you to brew. However, all Keurig Home Brewers are equipped with auto-off features should you choose not to leave the brewer on. The initial heating mode when turning the power on should take about 3 minutes.

How do I drain/store the brewer?

Empty the Water Reservoir before storing and take care to ensure that you store your Brewer in a safe and frost free environment. Please be sure to store your Brewer in its upright position to avoid water leakage from the inner tank. If you store the Brewer in a cold environment, you run the risk of water freezing inside the Brewer and causing damage. When you prepare to use it after storage, we recommend rinsing the Water Reservoir with fresh water and running three cleansing brews without a K-Cup. If you plan to move your Brewer to a different location, turn the Brewer off, unplug it and empty the Water Reservoir. If your Brewer has been in an environment below freezing, please be sure to let it warm to room temperature for 2 hours before brewing.

*Note: The internal tank of the brewer cannot be drained.

What kind of maintenance is required for the brewer?

Regular cleaning will prolong the life of the appliance. Regular cleaning of the Brewer’s external components is recommended for proper operation. We recommend cleaning with a soapy, damp non-abrasive cloth. The K-Cup holder and funnel, drip plate, drip tray and removable water reservoir (on the Elite, Special Edition, and Platinum) are dishwasher safe. NOTE: the removable lid of the water reservoir is NOT dishwasher safe. The brewer should be de-scaled at least every 6 months. Scale is harmless, but left unattended, it can hinder optimal Brewer performance. De-scaling your Brewer regularly helps maintain the heating element, water reservoir and other parts of the Brewer that come in contact with water. Better water quality and water heating means a better cup of coffee. We recommend de-scaling your Brewer at least every 6 months (every 3 months if your water has a high mineral content) The de-scaling process involves using 48 ounces of undiluted white vinegar.

My brewer is not working, can I have it serviced?

We are sorry you are experiencing difficulty with your Keurig brewer. Please contact us at 1-866-901-BREW for assistance.

What type of water should I use in my Keurig brewer?

Because coffee is 98.5 - 98.85% water, good quality drinking water is necessary for a good cup of coffee. If water is not pleasant to drink, it should not be used to make coffee. Never use softened water. Sodium ions in softened water form a gelatinous mass around the coffee grounds, slowing down the extraction process and causing over-extraction. This can also clog your brewer.

Solutions for Several Common Coffee-Brewing Water Problems:
  • Problem:
Chlorine in the water gives the coffee an ‘off’ taste
  • Solution:
Use charcoal filtering devices to remove chlorine residue

  • Problem:
"Chemical" tastes such as sulfur or iron
  • Solution:
Correct taste contamination with charcoal or other filters

  • Problem:
A build-up of magnesium and calcium scale (water hardness)
  • Solution:
Maintain and clean your Keurig brewer using the provided de-scaling instructions at least every 3-6 months. Do not use well water even if put through a ‘softener’.

  • Problem:
Coffee grounds become gooey and the brew tastes over-extracted or bitter.
  • Solution:
Avoid use of softened water to brew coffee. In areas where the water is hard, use bottled drinking water or a filter to purify.

The most common concern with water for brewing is the "hardness" of the water. This refers to various natural minerals found in water such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, sulfate and chloride. The number of grains of dissolved minerals changes the level of soluble solids extracted from the coffee.

As hard water passes through coffee brewing equipment, it produces deposits of scale or lime. This reduces the life and efficiency of the equipment, and affects the coffee flavor; bottled or filtered water should be used to solve this problem. Keurig also recommends de-scaling your brewer at least every 3-6 months depending on your water source.

I live at a high altitude. Can I use your brewer?

While Keurig Brewers are made to be used at elevations up to 6000 ft., the K-Cups may need to be pre-punctured prior to brewing to release the gas inside. To do this simply drop the K-Cup into the K-Cup chamber and push down slowly so that the bottom of the K-Cup is punctured by the exit needle in the bottom of the chamber. Also, the Keurig Special Edition, Ultimate, and Platinum models are equipped with a temperature control. You may want to experiment lowering the brew temperature in elevated areas.

How do I clean my K-Cup holder receptacle?
  1. Removing the K-Cup Assembly
To remove the assembly from the Brewer, open the cover by lifting the handle. Grasp the top of the K-Cup Holder with one hand while pushing up on the bottom of the assembly from underneath with the other until it releases.

  2. Cleaning the Funnel
The Funnel can be removed from the K-Cup Holder by pulling on it until it snaps off. The Funnel is dishwasher safe. To replace it just snap it back onto the K-Cup Holder.

  3. Cleaning the Exit Needle
The exit needle is located on the inside bottom of the K-Cup Holder. If coffee grounds or cocoa mix gets clogged in the exit needle, it can be cleaned using a paper clip or similar tool. Remove the funnel from the K-Cup Holder, insert the paper clip into the tube and move it around to loosen the clog and remove any debris. (Please note that you cannot poke all the way through the needle as the opening of the needle is located on the side and not the top) The K-Cup Holder is dishwasher safe.

  4. Installing the K-Cup Assembly into the Brewer
After cleaning, align the K-Cup Holder tabs with the opening placing the two front tabs on the bottom and the single tab on top and snap it into place by pushing down on the top rim.

Responses to Coffee and Tea Questions

What process is used to decaffeinate the coffee?

Keurig’s roasting partners use different processes to decaffeinate their coffee. The most widely used processes include the SWISS WATER® Process which is a 100% chemical free coffee decaffeination. Most other processes use chemical solvents, like methylene chloride, to decaffeinate coffee beans. Conversely, the SWISS WATER® Process uses only water when removing caffeine, producing water processed decaf coffee.

The majority of decaf coffee, about 80%, is decaffeinated with a chemical decaffeination method using chemicals like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. There are two types of chemical caffeine removal processes: direct and indirect.

The terms “water process”, “natural process”, and “European process” are sometimes used to describe decaffeination processes. In fact, all three terms often refer to decaffeination processes that use chemicals. We recommend contacting the Roaster directly to inquire about specific coffee decaffeination methods.

Does the Brewer make Hot Cocoa?

Yes, you can make gourmet Hot Cocoa with your Keurig brewer! Keurig offers Hot Cocoa K-Cups in 24-packs from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. GMCR developed the hot cocoa recipe with external suppliers and has performed extensive testing with revisions to introduce a product that appropriately represents Keurig and Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's quality and convenience standards. The Hot Cocoa K-Cups are designed to be brewed at the 8oz setting (the smaller brew size setting may result in a significant percentage of undissolved powder and a "weaker" Hot Cocoa beverage).

Timothy’s offers a White Hot Chocolate in K-Cups. Just put the K-Cup in your Keurig brewer, press the 8-ounce brew button for optimal results and in less than a minute you have a decadent white chocolate treat infused with hints of vanilla and cream. It is recommended that the Hot Cocoa K-Cup be stored at room temperature. If the Hot Cocoa K-Cups are cold, it makes it difficult for the powder to dissolve.

If you want your Keurig brewer to remain Kosher Pareve vs. Kosher-Dairy, you'll need a second Keurig Brewer for brewing Hot Cocoa K-Cups. Using a 2nd K-Cup holder will not keep the brewer Kosher Pareve.

How long are the K-Cups good for?

Each K-Cup has a Best Used by Date is imprinted on the side. The Best-Used-by-Date is a guideline for optimal freshness recommended by the roaster. It is not an expiration date. The K-Cups are nitrogen-flushed, sealed for freshness, and impermeable to oxygen, moisture and light.

How do I brew a Perfect Iced Tea K-Cup?

Brewing instructions are printed on the top of all Perfect Iced Tea Boxes.
For best results, we recommend that you:

  1. Store Iced Tea K-Cups at room temperature.
  2. Shake the K-Cup before brewing.
  3. Fill a 16 oz cup with Ice (determine what will fit best under your brewer).
We suggest you avoid glass as hot liquids may crack glass.
A smaller tumbler (12-14 oz) will result in a stronger tea.
  4. Use the 6-oz. setting on your brewer and brew directly onto the ice.
  5. Top off with additional ice or garnish with mint or lemon.
  6. Run a hot water brew cycle without a K-Cup after making Iced Tea
