Frequently Asked Questions

Question  Back to top
Who is Lavazza?
Answer

The company, Lavazza, was started back in 1895 by Luigi Lavazza in his grocery store in Turin, Italy. Since those beginnings, four generations have striven to create the perfect coffee blend for espresso and espresso beverages like cappuccinos, lattes, and more. This may be why Lavazza is now known as Italy’s favorite coffee.

Together, Lavazza and Keurig partnered to bring this taste to American consumers – balancing authentic Lavazza espresso taste with the pure simplicity of the Keurig® system.

Question  Back to top
How does one pronounce "Lavazza" correctly?
Answer

It is pronounced "LA VAATZ A" with the emphasis on "VAATZ".

Question  Back to top
Does the Rivo® System belong to Lavazza or Keurig?
Answer

Both. The brewer is designed and distributed by Keurig and the packs are crafted and manufactured by Lavazza.

Question  Back to top
What is the difference between coffee and espresso?
Answer

Espresso was originally conceived as a faster way of making coffee, hence the name "espresso", meaning "express" in Italian. This was done by forcing hot water through a finely ground blend of coffee at high pressure resulting in faster extraction.

Question  Back to top
How do I know that my espresso is being brewed properly?
Answer

After pushing the desired Espresso button, one will hear a hum as the Rivo® System brews the espresso. Then, the rich, dark espresso will pour from the brewer spout. Initially, this liquid will range from a deep dark brown to black in color. The color will become somewhat lighter towards the end of the process, and one may see lightercolored foam on the top of the espresso. This last layer is typically called the crema.

Question  Back to top
What type of coffee is used for the Rivo® packs?
Answer

Lavazza begins by sourcing 100% Arabica beans from some of the world’s most renowned coffee-producing regions, Central and South America, India, and East Africa. The beans are then blended together. Each blend follows a unique recipe in order to best showcase a particular aroma or taste. Each of the available Lavazza blends can be enjoyed purely as an espresso or be used as the base for your favorite cappuccino, latte, macchiato, and more.

Question  Back to top
What espresso varieties will be available? Will we be adding more?
Answer

Lavazza has created four unique blends modeled after the traditional Italian espresso.
  • Espresso Delicato (medium roast) – Pleasant aroma with balanced acidity. Slightly sweet with notes of chocolate and a long lasting citrus finish. 100% sustainably grown coffee.
  • Espresso Classico (medium roast) – A full bodied blend with notes of tropical fruit. Sweet floral qualities with a lingering fruity finish.
  • Espresso Intenso (dark roast) – A bold, full-bodied blend of aromas of butter and caramel. Subtle hints of smoke with a pleasantly crisp finish.
  • Espresso Decaf (medium roast decaffeinated) – Balanced flavor with gently sweet aromas of grape and dried fruit. A satisfying, smooth finish.
Just like at your favorite coffee shop, the perfect espresso base is key when making any espresso or espresso beverage. The current array of espressos provides that base, so that users can customize their favorite espresso beverage. In addition, each espresso tastes great on its own. However, if consumer research indicates a need for further espresso options, those options will be thoroughly researched and explored prior to extending the line.

Question  Back to top
What process is used to decaffeinate the espresso?
Answer

Lavazza uses an innovative decaffeination process involving water and carbon dioxide to best preserve the aromatic qualities of the coffee, while allowing for the decaffeination process to occur.

Question  Back to top
Why are only Lavazza varieties being offered?
Answer

To best design a brewer able to draw out the subtle notes within a true Italian espresso, Keurig partnered with the world renowned manufacturer of espresso, Lavazza. This partnership led both organizations to work hand-in-hand and create a system able to create a traditional Italian espresso in the home – simply and easily.

Question  Back to top
Are there any organic or fair trade varieties?
Answer

Espresso Delicato is 100% sustainably grown and is rainforest alliance certified.

Question  Back to top
Why is there no light roast?
Answer

Prior to launching the three medium roasts and single dark roast, the consumer taste profile for espresso drinkers was analyzed. The outcome was a consumer preference for the roasts that are being launched. We will continue to stay on top of changes in the American consumer taste profile and adjust the espresso offerings accordingly.

Question  Back to top
Are the Rivo® packs Kosher?
Answer

All Kosher Rivo® packs bearing the OU seal have been certified by the Orthodox Union. Initially, one may see some packs without the seal if they were manufactured prior to certification. Check for the OU seal to verify Kosher certification.

Question  Back to top
How much caffeine is in each Rivo® pack?
Answer

Espresso, in general, has more caffeine than an average coffee. However, the usual serving size for espressos is much smaller than for coffee – compare the size of a 1.4 oz shot of espresso with roughly 50-75 mg of caffeine to a standard 8 oz cup of coffee containing 90-100 mg of caffeine.

Question  Back to top
How much coffee is in each Rivo® pack?
Answer

Each Rivo® pack contains approximately 7.5 grams of finely blended Arabica beans. To maintain the rich Italian taste, the beans undergo a special roasting process while still in Italy where they are also packed for American consumption.

Question  Back to top
What quantity pack boxes will be offered? Are there any plans for other box?
Answer

All varieties will be packed in 18-count boxes. We will add further box counts and sizes to fulfill consumer and/or retailer needs. Please note that there is a free 12-count variety pack in every Rivo® System box. Each variety pack contains 3 Rivo® packs of each available blend.

Question  Back to top
What is the recommendation for customers who live in high altitudes?
Answer

The Rivo® System can be used in higher altitudes (up to 6,000 feet) without compromising any flavor during the brewing process.

Question  Back to top
How do I know if I have the right size cup for the various espresso-based beverages?
Answer

The espresso-based beverages in the Rivo® System Welcome Book recommend a 12 oz mug whether one is making a cappuccino or a latte. This larger mug size is suggested, so that there is minimal risk of having made too much froth for a particular mug size. As users become acclimated to their RivoTM System, they will start customizing their unique, balanced blend of espresso and milk and, as a result, have a clearer idea of the appropriately sized mug when making their favorite beverage.

Question  Back to top
How does the Rivo® pack work?
Answer

During the brewing process, the Rivo® pack is firmly held in place as hot water is evenly forced through punctured holes in the front and back of the pack. This allows the beverage to be extracted from the finely ground coffee.

Question  Back to top
How do I best pour the milk into my beverage?
Answer

While creating one’s beverage is a matter of personal preference, here are a few tips. With all of the below, one should always take the lid off the Frothing Pitcher prior to combining the milk with the espresso.

  • When making a Latte, pour the heated milk into the already-made espresso from a short distance from the mug. This keeps the froth back and allows the milk to be poured first. At the end, top the beverage off with the froth.
  • When making a Cappuccino, pour the heated milk and foamed milk into the already-made espresso with the Frothing Pitcher almost touching the mug.
  • When making a cold Latte, combine everything once it is completed. Pour the espresso over the ice and finish the beverage with the frothed cold milk.
In each case, use a spoon as needed to scoop out foam from the Frothing Pitcher.

Question  Back to top
Can the Rivo® packs be recycled?
Answer

No, Rivo® packs themselves are currently not recyclable. However, the boxes, in which they are sold, are recyclable.

Question  Back to top
Can I use my own cup to froth milk?
Answer

No, the Rivo® System is optimally designed for the Frothing Pitcher, so that one obtains perfect hot or cold froth – every time.

Question  Back to top
What size espresso is recommended for my espresso beverage?
Answer

Size is a matter of taste preference. However, we recommend 1 short espresso for hot cappuccinos and lattes and a lungo espresso for iced/cold beverages. It is easy to make a ‘double’, simply brew 2 Rivo® packs (Two separate packs one after another. It is not recommended to brew the same pack twice.)

Question  Back to top
Are phthalates used in the Rivo® pack? Is it BPA free?
Answer

The packs do NOT contain any phthalates and are BPA free (BPA: Bisphenol A).

Question  Back to top
Is there a filter in the Rivo® packs?
Answer

Rivo® packs do not contain filters.

Question  Back to top
Will the ingredients for all packs be on the boxes?
Answer

Yes, the ingredients will be listed on every box. The current assortment is 100% Arabica beans with no sweeteners or flavoring.

Question  Back to top
Will the packs be individually marked with a BUBD (Best Used by Date)?
Answer

Yes, the packs will be individually marked. On average, the shelf life is 24 months, because the Rivo® packs have been vacuum-packed to sustain product integrity. The BUBD date will be noted both on the portion pack and on the sleeve. The batch code will also be noted by the BUBD date.

Question  Back to top
Where are the Rivo® packs manufactured?
Answer

All Rivo® packs are crafted and packed at the Lavazza plant in Gattinara just outside of Turin, Italy.
